Alpines split opening day double-header with Islanders

The Alpines rode strong pitching from a trio of hurlers en route to a season-opening 2-1 victory over the visiting Charlottetown Islanders.

Starter Shaun O’Toole walked leadoff batter Taylor Larkin to start the game and Larkin would later score on a two-out bloop single by Grant Grady.  But that’s all the staff would give up for the day as O’Toole settled down striking out six over his two innings of work.

Brooks Saunders took over and pitched a pair of scoreless innings himself before ceding to Dan Taylor who shut the door for the final three and earned the win.  The Alpines two runs came courtesy of a two-out two run homerun from the bat of Mark Phillips, a blast that also scored Jack Shannon who had singled earlier in the inning.

Jack Shannon made his first start in an Alpines uniform as he took the mound in the second game of a season opening doubleheader against the Charlottetown Islanders.

The Alpines built up a two run lead with single runs in the third and fourth innings while Shannon held the Island team hit-less through 5 and 2/3 until Jordan Stevenson’s double in the bottom of the sixth. Reliever Kent Fulton came on to shut the door on the Isles in the sixth but the wheels fell off in the top of the seventh.

A trio of Alpines relievers could not contain the Islanders as they scored five times with back to back two-run doubles by Jordan Stevenson and Brady Arsenault. The Alpines made some noise in the bottom of the seventh bringing the tying run to the plate but Charlottetown closer Brody MacDonald came in the shut the door.
