Import Ryan Owens arrives this week

The Saint John Alpines of the NB Senior Baseball League are pleased to announce the arrival of their import player, Ryan Owens. Ryan comes to the Alpines after a four year playing career at Mount.St Mary’s University ((www., a Division 1 school in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Mount St. Mary’s competes in the Northeast Conference.

Owens, a native of Burke, Virginia, has completed his degree program in Sports Management, and is pursuing his masters in Business Administration. He will return to Mount St Mary’s as an assistant coach for the upcoming season. He bats and throws right, and stands at 6’2″ and weighs in at 190 pounds.

Owens comes to Saint John having hit in the leadoff spot for the Mountaineers, where he hit .294 this season and played the outfield with a stellar .982 fielding percentage. He led the Mountaineers in hits, runs, doubles, stolen bases and batting average for the 2016 season.

He played in the Cal Ripken Collegiate League last summer, and the Coastal Plains League in 2014. During his high school years, he played with the Virginia Barnstormers travel team. He is expected to be an everyday player with the Alpines, not only in the outfield but will likely see some time pitching as well.

Each team in the NB Senior League is allowed to sign one import – a non-resident of New Brunswick. For the last few years, the Alpines have had imports from Maine who commuted to games, but this season Owens will reside in the city for the season. It is expected that he will be involved in teaching at baseball clinics in the area. Details will be announced at a later date

Owens stated he is excited to be coming to the Alpines organization, and experience a new area, new people and most likely a different culture. He will be bringing his golf clubs and fishing gear with him.

The team will have their first chance to meet Ryan at practice on Thursday night beginning at 6:30 at Memorial Field. He will also be golfing in the Dave Ring Memorial Tournament on Friday, and will see his first action as a player on Sunday when the Alpines host the Charlottetown lslanders in a double header, starting at 2 PM.
