After losing a pair of close games to Charlottetown in last weekend’s season opening double header, the Alpines climbed into the the win column with an 8-7 extra win in extra innings over the Moncton Fisher Cast last night at Memorial Field.
The visiting Moncton club jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. But the Pines responded quickly in the bottom of the first. Leadoff man Adam Clark worked himself on with a walk and was followed by a two run homerun by Devan Thomas. Number three hitter Ron Barton promptly singled and was followed by a another two run jack by newcomer Mark Phillips. Just like that the Pines had a 4-2 lead and still none out. But the visiting Cats took advantage of 5 Alpines errors to score 5 unearned runs and after some back and forth the score ended up tied 7-7. The Pines had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the 7th but hit into a fly out double-play. However the home team would not waste their opportunity in the 8th. Clark once again started the rally with a leadoff single, promptly stole second and one out later raced home on a Barton walk off single.
Reliever Peter Shaw pitched four strong innings in relief for the win, taking over from starter Sherman Yeo in the top of the fifth. The two teams lock horns again on Sunday in an afternoon matchup at Moncton’s Kiwanis Park.
